ARTIST OF THE MONTH:
February 2012
Nancy Schroeder
Nancy's current work involves painting the "interior" of flowers and blooms on clear acrylic.

Artist's Statement:
For me, flowers are nature's masterpiece.
Each flower has a grandeur both inside and out - a perfect display of color and delicate form outside, yet when viewed from the inside out, a strength from an equally stunning structure.
I am fascinated by the structure of flowers and the effects which light transference has through them. Tucked deep inside is the true beauty. I"ll never run out of flowers or blossoms, as they're limitless in nature. I focus on individual blossoms of all flowers.
I developed a unique understanding of flowers while working in the floral industry. My still life works are directly related to the physical capabilities of floral art. I began painting flowers in 2007 with "Frozen Rose."
Currently, my work focuses on the movement of light through the structure of single blossoms. The variety of tone in monochrome is a great tool for directing the eye to the beauty inside floral structure. In 2012, I've introduced Blooming Recipe's Kitchen Art: designed to fit in any kitchen and personalized to any taste, and painted on acrylic to fit any decor. I paint all the organic ingredients - the single blooms of fruit, vegetables, spices and herbs, including grains, greens or nuts. No meat, fish or dairy are included. Mix and match paintings of various ingredients to portray your favorite recipes, changing your art seasonally or depicting new favorites. Hang the painted clear panels, or add your own color behind the painting. Frame it to suit your decor.

The next time you pick up a flower, close your eyes and run your fingers over it. Feel the density and texture. My art is a visual expression of what you're feeling.

There will always be a flower blooming, and there's a flower for every occasion. My art is about exposing them for what they really are.

A Brief Bio:
Born in 1959, I call Massachusetts my first home, but for most of my adult life I have been transplanted all over the United States until I moved to St. Louis, Missouri 13 years ago and now call it home.

Painting with oils was the first major direction I followed.  I sold my first painting, "Clipper Ships at Sea," when I was 18 and serving in the U.S. Navy. I served in the Navy from 1978 to 1986. I attended U.C.S.D. in La Jolla, California in 1983 for art and business. I attended Florissant Valley Community College, Florissant, Missouri in 2003 and 2004 for art.

I started working with Oil Paintsticks in 2000, just before I had a career change and went into the world of flowers.  I developed a unique understanding with flowers on a structural level.

I've been painting with Oil Paintsticks because of the versatility as a medium and that it never slows me down. In 2009, I developed a technique using artist's ground for pastels. This technique allows me to shape or sculpt, then paint.

In 2010 I painted "Still Life Fully Exposed," turning traditional still life florals inside-out.

I currently teach workshops on Oil Paintsticks and am a member of Art St. Louis, Projekt 30, Northern Arts Council,  World Art Foundation and MYslart.org.
